A Week In Darts – June 17, 2024 – Littler Adds To His Title Tally At The Poland Darts Masters

The triple-header of World Series events concluded in Poland at the weekend where Luke Littler was victorious once again. Here’s our round-up of the last seven days in the world of darts…

LITTLER BEATS CROSS IN POLAND FINAL

Luke Littler picked up his second World Series title of the year with an impressive victory at the Poland Darts Masters in Gilwice on Saturday.

The Premier League champion ran out a comfortable 8-3 winner against Rob Cross in the final to claim his sixth tournament win in his debut season on the PDC tour.

The 17-year-old had opened his account with success at the Bahrain Darts Masters in January, before following that up with Players Championship and European Tour victories, along with the Premier League last month.

And he continued to add to his haul of titles at the weekend, beating Peter Wright, Michael Smith and Cross in front of more than 9,000 fans at the PreZero Arena.

“I’m delighted to get the win, it’s an amazing feeling to lift trophies in front of massive crowds,” Littler said.

“I had a week off in Orlando (after the US Darts Masters) and there was a bit of rustiness at times but I’ve played well overall.

“I want to win as much as I can. The first six months of the year have been really good and I can’t wait for the second half of the season.”

After defying a 109.73 average from a resurgent Wright in the quarter-finals, Littler then survived match darts in a semi-final thriller against Smith.

It was a more straightforward path to victory in the final for ‘The Nuke’, who averaged 101.84 and hit a 164 checkout on his way to an 8-3 win over Cross.

For Cross, it was a third World Series final in as many weeks, with ‘Voltage’ triumphing in New York at the US Darts Masters before finishing runner-up in the Nordic Darts Masters during the previous two weekends.

ASHTON GOES BACK-TO-BACK ON WOMEN’S SERIES

Lisa Ashton returned to winning ways in style on the PDC Women’s Series as she claimed back-to-back titles in Wigan on Sunday.

The four-time world champion lost her first game in both of Saturday’s events, before responding with a run of 13 consecutive victories to win both events the following day.

Ashton overcame Aileen de Graaf 5-1 in the Event 11 final, before seeing off Beau Greaves by the same scoreline in the decider of Event 12.

Greaves did not leave empty handed at the weekend, as she extended her record of Women’s Series titles to 23 with success in Event 9 on Saturday.

The reigning WDF women’s world champion edged past Mikuru Suzuki 5-4 in the final, whilst a new champion was crowned in the day’s second tournament with Gemma Hayter victorious in Event 10.

The former England international, who only returned to competitive darts this year after an eight-year break, got the better of Rhian O’Sullivan 5-3 in the final to clinch her first Women’s Series title.

Despite missing half of the tournaments in the qualification period, Hayter was right in the mix for the Women’s World Matchplay but finished just £200 short of a spot in the field for Blackpool.

The eight-player field for next month’s summer showpiece was confirmed following Sunday’s two Women’s Series events, with defending champion Greaves joined by 2022 winner Fallon Sherrock, Ashton, Suzuki, Noa-Lynn van Leuven, O’Sullivan, Anastasia Dobromyslova and Katie Sheldon.

ENGLAND PLAYERS TAKE ON DARTS CHALLENGE

England made a winning start to their UEFA Euro 2024 campaign with a 1-0 victory against Serbia last night, but it has not been as successful for the players on the oche in Germany so far.

Gareth Southgate’s squad have been taking on members of the media in a three-dart challenge at their base at The Golfresort Weimarer Land.

With the Three Lions trailing 2-0, England’s number one Jordan Pickford took on talkSPORT’s Faye Carruthers on Friday.

Pickford’s team mates Kieran Tripper and John Stones were amongst those in attendance and watched Carruthers triumph against the Everton goalkeeper to extend the media’s lead to 3-0.
