WINNING RETURN FOR ANDERSON

Gary Anderson marked his return to PDC competition after a near two-month break in style by winning Players Championship 22 on Tuesday.

‘The Flying Scotsman’ had last competed on the ProTour in early August and enjoyed a dream return at the Mattioli Arena, in Leicester.

Anderson threw five 100+ averages in seven matches before edging past non tour card holder Connor Scutt 8-4 in the final.

“I’ve surprised myself,” the 53-year-old said. “My second game was a struggle, but I played well against Mike (De Decker) and Wadey (James Wade) in the semi-finals.

“Young Connor is a cracking dart player. He missed the 170 three times and he wired double 18 for a 147. He’s not even got his tour card, so he’ll be one to watch.

“I’ve been busy doing other things recently, but I have been away playing in a few exhibitions.

“I’m at that stage now where there is no pressure on me, but when you come here, you want to play, you want to perform.”

On Wednesday, Dave Chisnall picked up his fourth ProTour title of the season with a victory in Players Championship 23.

‘Chizzy’ produced 108 and 107 averages in wins against Mervyn King and Madars Razma, before battling past Chris Dobey 8-4 in the decider.

Dobey had earlier thrown a nine darter in the first leg of his semi-final win over Martin Schindler, whilst Adam Warner also achieved perfection with a nine-dart finish against Jurjen van der Velde in the second round.

VAN GERWEN ENDS EURO TOUR DROUGHT

Michael van Gerwen ended a 16-month title drought on the European Tour after claiming the Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest on Sunday night.

The world number three holds the record for the most European Tour titles, having bagged his 36th victory at the Belgian Darts Trophy in May 2023.

And the Dutchman extended his record haul with a dramatic victory over first-time European Tour finalist Gian van Veen at the MVM Dome.

The all-Dutch finale saw van Veen miss a match dart at the bull to win 8-6 and van Gerwen fought back with a 110 checkout in the decider to get over the line.

“This was really important. I had to battle really hard,” van Gerwen said. “I was struggling in the final and Gian took advantage, but I was more battling with myself.

“I think I’m on the right way, especially with my new darts. I missed the winning feeling for a long time but now everything falls into place.

“I want to win more and my love for the game is still there. I need to make sure I keep this momentum going.”

It was a record-breaking weekend in Budapest as for the first time three players threw a nine-dart leg in the same European Tour event.

On Saturday, Norway’s Cor Dekker and van Gerwen both struck perfection with nine-dart finishes, before Germany’s number one Martin Schindler got in on the act the next day with a nine darter of his own.

NORTH AMERICAN TRIO SEAL ALLY PALLY RETURNS

Leonard Gates, Jim Long and Stowe Buntz will make their Alexandra Palace returns this December after all three players qualified for the PDC World Darts Championship at the weekend.

The Championship Darts Corporation (CDC) ProTour reached its conclusion with the final three events of the season in Brownsburg, with three spots in the World Championship field up for grabs.

America’s Gates sealed his return after finishing top of the CDC Order of Merit, whilst Long booked his place in London as the highest-ranked Canadian.

Buntz, a World Championship debutant last year, took the last spot as the next highest-ranked player, edging out fellow American Adam Sevada who won two of the three titles at the weekend to finish in fourth place on the Order of Merit.

The next international qualifier for the World Championship will be confirmed when the African Darts Group qualifier takes place this weekend.
